WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE & DOES IT MATTER?

Below are four beliefs on which we often have a different perspective to other Christian groups. Our view on these topics centres around the gospel message - that God is our loving heavenly father who sent his son, Jesus (the Christ), to save us from our sins, so we can be part of his coming kingdom of peace (Matthew 1:21, John 20:31, Acts 8:12, 17:30-32).

In the Bible, baptism is a rational decision of adults or young people who have come to know God's love through his Son, Jesus. What we believe matters, because it impacts on our relationship with God, and how we live (Acts 8:26-38, 2:40-42, 1 John 2:3-11). God invites us to have a searching mind so we can keep growing and learning in his ways (Acts 17:11, 27, Hebrews 11:6, 1 John 4:1).

The Devil

We believe that we are responsible for our own actions and we are called to battle against our own inner desires, not a literal devil. God declares that he alone is the one and only power and this leaves no room for another power that works against him (James 1:14-15, Isaiah 45:5-7, Mark 7:20-23, Genesis 4:7).

Life after Death

We believe that eternal life is a gift or reward for the faithful that will be granted in God’s kingdom, here on earth. Jesus was the first to be raised to eternal life, three days after his crucifixion, and our hope is also to be resurrected, when Jesus returns.

God invites us to walk with him and seek eternal life, which is why we do not believe that we already have an eternal soul, or that the unfaithful will suffer eternal torment.

How does Jesus save?

Atonement

Most theories of atonement focus on Jesus' death as a payment or punishment for our sins.

We believe that God sent Jesus out of his great love for us, to show us his way and to bring us to repentance so we can be forgiven for our sins (Acts 3:26, John 3:16). It is our inner change of heart that God desires, not our death (Luke 12:32, Ezekiel 33:11).

Jesus died in faith that God would raise him from the dead, knowing that his resurrection would bring many to believe and repent (1 Peter 3:18). In overcoming sin, Jesus also become the perfect king (the Christ) who will bring the true peace and justice that all the faithful have waited for since the beginning (Philippians 2:5-11, Hebrews 2:10, 11:40).

The Trinity

The trinity is a belief that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are co-equal and co-eternal parts of the same 'Godhead'. In short, that Jesus is God, both fully human and fully God.

We believe that Jesus is the son of God. This is why we do not believe that Jesus is God himself, but rather, the Christ, the one that God has anointed to be king and who God has given power and authority to sit at his right hand (John 20:31, Hebrews 1:1-3, Philippians 2:8-11).
